As Tesla continues to develop its vehicle range, one of the forthcoming
vehicles linked with the corporation is the Model Y. This electric car has
yet to be confirmed by corporation, but recent comments by Tesla’s CEO and
founder, Elon Musk, have suggested that the existence of the Model Y behind
the scenes is common internal knowledge.

Tweet leak
Musk in fact inadvertently (or so it seems) revealed the information last
week, when the charismatic leader of Tesla disclosed the existence of the
Model Y via Twitter. The reason that we can assume this was inadvertent is
that Musk deleted the tweet immediately, and we have heard nothing since on
the existence of this vehicle.

But as Tesla continues to attempt to develop its market share, it would be
logical for the electric car corporation to manufacture another vehicle.
Tesla is perhaps not successful enough to be considered mainstream as of
yet, but at the same time it has established itself as a significant
automaker. The reputation of the company is possibly greater than its actual
size, and an ambitious operator such as Musk will naturally hope to convert
this publicity into sales as soon as possible.

Naturally, we don’t have too much concrete information about the Model Y at
the time of writing. One thing we can say with almost a certainty, if indeed
this vehicle ever does come to fruition, is that it will likely feature the
falcon-wing doors of the Model X. This feature that is perennially compared
to the DeLorean vehicle that featured in the ‘Back to the Future’ series was
stated by Musk to be a certainty for either the Model 3 or Model Y. It is
generally considered that this feature will not be part of the makeup of the
Model 3, so this would naturally lead to the conclusion that the Model Y
will indeed feature the falcon-wing technology.

Model Y already trademarked

Another interesting aspect of the Model Y is that although direct
information from Tesla has been in extremely short supply, we do know that
the company trademarked the Model Y concept back in 2013. At this time,
Tesla also trademarked the model E, suggesting that we could see numerous
new Tesla models emerge in the foreseeable future.

In addition to the deleted tweet that many media outlets have picked up on,
another such example slipped under the radar somewhat. In the very same
Twitter session, Musk suggested that around twelve months from now there
would be a cheaper version of the Model X featuring a 70kWh battery. Musk
also rapidly eliminated this tweet from his Twitter feed, but this suggests
that the Model Y could benefit from this particular specification.

Lithium-ion
It is also reasonable to assume that the Model Y will make use of Tesla’s
lithium-ion batteries. According to Tesla Chief Technical Officer JB
Straubel, this technology will be central to the future of the company, and
indeed the corporation expects it to become influential in the motor
industry as a whole.

Whispers also suggest that the Model Y might be an SUV crossover vehicle
that is bigger than a conventional sedan, but possibly also smaller than a
traditional sport utility vehicle. Tesla is continually looking for
crossover appeal, as it attempts to increase its market share.

Should the Model Y indeed be a crossover vehicle it is reasonable to assume
that the interior will be relatively similar to that of the existing Model
X. However, this could be a more bijou and compact vehicle than the Model X,
particularly as Tesla is likely to make this a more affordable vehicle than
some of its previous releases.

Drivetrain
Some speculation is required when attempting to predict the
performance-oriented aspects of the Model Y. But it is reasonable to assume
that based on the numbers relating to previous Tesla vehicles that it will
be capable of something in the region of 400hp. The Model Y may have a
shorter battery range than other Tesla electric cars, particularly if it is
priced as an affordable alternative, but we should expect a range of over
200 miles.

Price range
Certainly it is impossible to predict a precise price range for the Model Y,
as Tesla has confirmed absolutely no information on this subject. But it
wouldn simply make sense for the corporation to release the vehicle at a
price point that would make it competitive and mainstream in nature. This
would suggest that the Model Y will retail at a price point considerably
more affordable than the Model X.

It is expected that the Model 3 will sell at $35,000 when it is released, so
we can expect the Model Y to be in this sort of a ballpark as well. Although
it is notable that the major competition for this vehicle retails at a
significantly higher price point than that of the mooted figure for the
Model 3.

Competition
Many experts believe that the Volvo XC90 T8 will be a major rival to the
Model Y. This twin-engine, plug-in hybrid is not quite the all-electric
vehicle that the Model Y will certainly be, but it does have the sort of
green image that would make it a natural rival to this proposed Tesla
release.

Pricing for the Volvo XC90 T8 starts at $68,100, which suggests that Tesla
should be able to significantly undercut it.

Strategy
The big issue for Tesla as it develops and ultimately releases the Model Y
is to produce a vehicle that is effectively different to the existing Model
X. Overlap could be a serious issue, and Tesla will only want to release a
Model Y that is explicitly different to the forthcoming crossover utility
vehicle.

This will certainly be a challenge, as the nature of Tesla as a company
ensures that it must release relevant vehicles within a relatively narrow
niche. For example, the idea of a super sporty performance car doesn’t
really fit into the Tesla ethos. So delivering a brand that really speaks to
customers, and which is significantly different from other Tesla vehicles,
will ultimately decide the success or otherwise of the Model Y.
