eRally Geiranger 2015: Taking electric vehicles out of town!
Norsk Elbilforening Sep 14, 2015
The world´s best place for EV tourism

- Boasting charging opportunities for more than 60 cars, we welcomed a crowd
of EV drivers to world famous tourist spot Geiranger, Norway, says Christina
Bu of Norsk elbilforening.

Beyond 50 electric vehicles (called elbil in Norwegian) with more than 100
people on board, from all over the country, showed up for the EV festival
based at historic Hotel Union and Norsk fjords enter in the last weekend of
August.

The world famous UNESCO World Heritage Site Geiranger was - unofficially -
crowned the best developed place for EV tourism: The village with a
population of about 250 now boasts more than one charging point for each
tenth citizen.

- This is probably a world record and the reason why we crown Geiranger as
the best village in the world for EV tourism, says Christina Bu, secretary
general of the Norwegian EV Association (Norsk elbilforening).

The EV Festival also constituted the first part of the association's 20th
anniversary (see fact file below). To promote development of charging
infrastructure in rural areas, and at the same time EV tourism, this year´s
event was located in scenic Geiranger.

- With our EV festival we would, once again, like to place the focus on the
EV not being just a metropolitan phenomenon. Last weekend we proved
emissionfree EV tourism in a wonderful, rural scenery is not just possible.
It is perfect, says Bu.

Not only Norwegian EV drivers took their vehicles into the lovely fjord and
mountain scenery last weekend: Harm Otten came all the way from the
Netherlands to join the rally. An interview with Otten, in English, has been
published on Norway´s most popular EV website (elbil.no):
elbil.no/nyheter/elbilpolitikk/3617-from-holland-to-geiranger-in-his-renault-zoe

After the grand opening of the charging park at Norsk fjordsenter, which now
offers both quick charger (CHAdeMO and CCS) and 24 flexible charging
stations (11-22 kW AC), all participating EVs took on the steep slopes to
famous landmark Dalsnibba, situated 1,476 meters above fjord level.

In addition a total of 34 temporary charging points made sure all
participants at the festival were able to be fully charged.

- There was no range anxiety at all, and EVs crowded the parking lot at busy
Dalsnibba for a change - instead of just fossil fuelled cars and tourist
buses, says Bu.

In other words: The future also arrived at the famous landmark this
Saturday. See large and scenic photo album from the EV festival on Flickr!

FACT FILE: Norsk elbilforening
Norsk elbilforening (Norwegian EV Association) was founded in November 1995.
Norsk elbilforening´s primary goal is to promote zero emission transport
solutions. We support the introduction of vehicles that run fully or
partially on renewable energy. Norsk elbilforening is an independent
consumer organization (NGO) and today has almost 27.000 members. Norway now
has more than 60.000 battery electric vehicles (BEV) and around 7.000
plug-in hybrids (PHEV). This means 2,5 percent of the total passenger car
fleet is now chargeable.

Thanks to aggressive government incentives and substantial charging
infrastructure, Norway has the highest number of electric cars per capita of
any country in the world.

Now, some of that enthusiasm for electric cars is going viral.

A video of a rally held by the Norsk elbilforening (Norwegian EV
Association) last month has already garnered more than 25,000 views on
Facebook and YouTube, the group points out.

The video shows a convoy of around 50 electric cars driving through the town
of Geiranger, and to the top of a nearby mountain--all in celebration of the
group's 20th anniversary.

Geiranger--population 250--has been unofficially crowned the "world's best
place for EV tourism" by the Norwegian EV Association, because it has one
charging station for roughly every 10 citizens.

Club members made the most of Geiranger's scenic location, shooting a long
line of electric cars climbing up a twisty mountain road.

There are also several dramatic overhead shots that were taken from a drone.

The convoy included a wide variety of electric cars, from Nissan Leafs to
the popular Tesla Model S, as well as Tesla's earlier Roadster.

The group also had a smattering of BMW i3, Mercedes-Benz B-Class Electric
Drive, and Volkswagen e-Golf models.

Viewers will also spot a few models not currently sold in the U.S.,
including the Renault Zoe and Twizy, and the Nissan e-NV200 van.

This level of enthusiasm for electric cars among owners isn't unique to
Norway, but no other country has such favorable government policies.

Currently, electric-car buyers pay no registration fees, and several taxes
on cars are waived or lowered.

They also get free parking, free public charging, exemption from bridge
tolls, and access to bus lanes.

Some of the advantages are also circumstantial.

Norway also generates 97 percent of its electricity from renewable sources,
so the carbon footprint of the energy used to charge electric cars is much
lower.

And the majority of Norway's population lives and works within the capital
city of Oslo or only a short distance away, making range anxiety less of an
issue than in other countries.

«Some of the best 2 mins you can spend today», «Wow! This is good» and
«Amazing HD video of an EV rally in Norway!». It´s #throwbackthursday!

The quotes are just a few people´s opinions in social media after watching
our now world famous video from Geiranger. So if you haven't watched it
already, we strongly recommend you do.

The video was recorded during our EV festival just a month ago, and since we
published on Facebook and YouTube it has been viewed more than 25,000 times.

Our film shows breathtaking nature in a delightful combination with most EV
models available on the Norwegian market, past and present, spanning from
TH!NK and Buddy to Tesla Model S.

Well, of course we also have to mention Nissan LEAF, Kia Soul, BMW i3,
Nissan e-NV200, Renault Twizy, Mercedes-Benz B-Klasse ED, Mitsubishi i-MiEv,
Renault Zoe, Volkswagen e-Golf, Citroën C-Zero and Tesla Roadster. They were
all there.

Playing more strings
Rune Hole, on behalf of Norsk elbilforening, both arranged the event in
Geiranger and made the film in cooperation with drone photographer Morten
Henden Aamot and Arctic Coating AS. The latter usually delivers one of Norsk
elbilforenings many member offers.

But the guys involved are playing far more strings than detailing.

[image] Sigurd Jøsevold Dons edited the movie in-between surgeries as he
injured his hand right before the event. Iver Svardal was in charge of
planning, organizing the film crew and co-producing with cinematographer
Kristoffer Grindheim.

Editor of elbil.no, Ståle Frydenlund, made sure text and voiceover was added
to the final product.
Delighted EV drivers

Ole-Arthur Hegrenes, of Førde, Sogn og Fjordane, told us on our Facebook
page that he was delighted to see their electric family car, a Volkswagen
e-Golf featured in the film. Hegrenes and wife Anni took on the challenge,
along with more than 50 other EV owners, also facing a bit of range anxiety
on their way to the event.

[image] After running almost empty at mountain pass Strynefjellet, just
before the slopes down to Geiranger, it was smooth sailing. They also got to
test the new fast charger first (picture).

We were also delighted to welcome Dutchman Harm Otten to Geiranger. The
Renault Zoe owner is of course also featured in the movie.

A lot of pictures from the event were also posted on Instagram. Search the
tag #erallygeiranger. For even more extensive footage, check out our Flickr
