I read this and at first thought, "Who would want to ride in a vehicle you
can't see out of?"

Then I realized it probably meant that the vehicles didn't have CLOSABLE
windows. So then I thought, "Who would want to ride in a vehicle with
windows you can't close in the rain or in winter?"

I remember a 60s-era magazine ad for the Shelby Cobra that said "If you need
roll-up windows for perfection, forget it." Well, side curtains ARE a
pretty feeble substitute for roll-up windows. If you've ever driven an
original Citicar, or a Shelby, or even an old Triumph in foul weather,
you'll know what I mean.
