World record: P85D driving 728.7 km, 452.8 mi on a single charge
Bjørn Nyland Aug 25, 2015

Tesla Model S P85D sets new world record in hypermiling. The car drove 728.7
km, 452.8 mi on a single charge. Start and stop point was supercharger in
Rødekro, Denmark.

If this video convinced you to buy a new Tesla Model S, you can use the
referral link below to get $1000 discount. Morgan will also receive $1000 in
credits by Tesla. I already have ten referrals and can't get more sales.

452 miles on a single charge in a Tesla Model S P85D

This past weekend, Bjørn Nyland of Norway established what has to be a world
record for a production electric car. He and a buddy traveled 452.8 miles in
his Tesla Model S P85D on a single battery charge. Could they have gone even
farther? Yes, his co-driver says. but they didn’t want to press their luck.

“Yeah, we wanted to make it a trip with the same start as end point. Then
there will be no trolling about difference in wind and elevation. We could
have driven around a bit before going to the supercharger, but it was not
worth the risk. We spent the whole weekend, and did not really have time to
wait for a flatbed.”

To stretch their mileage as much as possible, they kept the Tesla at 25 mph
the whole way. That converts to more than 18 hours behind the wheel,
watching the scenery going slowly by. That takes dedication. But dedication
to Tesla is something Nyland has lots of. He has his own YouTube channel
devoted entirely to his the trips he has made in his Tesla. In the time he
has owned it, he has covered a lot of ground.

He is also the fellow who won the Tesla referral contest a few weeks ago. He
was the first person in the world to have 10 people buy a new Tesla Model S
based upon his recommendation. His prize? A brand new Tesla Model X Founder
Edition absolutely free plus an invitation to the official opening of the
Gigafactory in Nevada next year.

Asked if the record-setting run (the prior record was set by a father and
son team who eked out 423.5 miles) would be certified by Guinness World
Records, Nyland’s co-driver answered, “Did not talk with the guys at
Guinness, so I think not. They would probably want to track the whole thing
with a sealed GPS box or something. We did GPS tracking to confirm the
numbers in the Tesla, though. But as this record may soon be taken by a 90D
or eventually a 120D or similar, there was not much point to make it too
official. It was more to show what is possible with this awesome family
car.” A Tesla 120D? Does he know something the rest of us don’t?

The seats in a Model S may be wonderful, but 18 hours in the saddle is more
than most people would care to experience. Nyland may be the most
enthusiastic Tesla owner in the world, but there are lots of other Tesla
owners who are not that far behind him.

Norway's Bjorn Nyland Does A Super Drive By Supercharger In Denmark

There's a reason this guy's so popular. Bjorn Nyland might be familiar to
readers because he just earned himself a free Tesla Model X by successfully
getting ten people to buy a Model S. He was able to promote the all-electric
car so well because he's been doing it for ages. He's proven the capability
of the S by taking it 233 miles on a charge even in the deepest, darkest
Norwegian winter. He also knows how to wring a lot more miles out of an
electric car when the weather's warm. A little over 452 miles, to be exact.

Decked out in a Model S with a "Slow" sticker on the rear end, Nyland and
his friend Morgan Tørvolt drove for 18 hours and 40 minutes at an average
speed of just 24.2 miles per hour (ouch) to get 452.8 miles out of their
battery pack. They started and ended at the Supercharger station in Rødekro,
Denmark. That's an extreme bit of hypermiling that I think throws down the
challenge gauntlet to Wayne Gerdes or anyone else who wants to see just how
far a big EV with two people inside can go. Unsurprisingly, the duo did the
drive in a P85D, which has an 85-kWh battery pack, the biggest Tesla
currently sells. A P90D model is on the way, so we'll open up the floor to
comments to see how many miles you think can be be stretched out of an extra
5 kWh. Pure math would say Nyland and Tørvolt got 5.3 more miles per kWh,
which would translate to 26.5 more miles. Somehow we think that's a floor,
not a ceiling.

The previous record for hypermiling an 85-kWh Model S was set by the
father-son duo of David and Adam Metcalf in last 2013. Their record was
423.5 miles.
