The "flickering red taillights" is simply an artefact of the video capture
and the (common, these days with LED lights) duty-cycle blinking of lights
when they are at less than full brightness.
Notice that when the lights are coming on full power during braking that also
the blinking stops? That is because they are 100% on during that time.

You can see the blinking with your naked eye at night, when you quickly sweep
your eyes past the lights, because every blink will hit your eye at a different
spot, so you see a series of individual images of the lights repeated after
each other.
If the lights are at a longer duty cycle, you will see a
stripe-break-stripe-break
type of image, but if the lights are only on a short flash, then you will see
rather sharp images of the lights repeated across your field of vision.
This is the same for LED car lights, digital alarm clocks and a host of other
light generating devices that are duty-cycled or controlled using a matrix-scan
to reduce the number of control lines.

The reason that the video shows them blinking on and off is due to the camera's
own scanning speed that takes samples of the light received at slightly
different
speed than the speed of duty cycle switching of the lights themselves.
This is a similar effect as seeing the rims turn slowly backward on a car
driving forward at speed. The difference between rim spokes whizzing by and the
camera capturing them, each next spoke a small distance further back so it
appears
as if the subsequent captures are the rims turning slowly backwards.

The Tesla Model X keeps marching right along to its scheduled start date, so
far (surprisingly) without any publicly-known setbacks or last-minute
delays. As such, prototype sightings of the forthcoming electric SUV are
becoming increasingly frequent, and two such videos have surfaced in as many
days.

(A heartfelt thanks to our friends at Autoblog for sharing these clips.)

First, a Tesla Model X prototype was spotted in Chandler, Arizona, as you
can see in the video just below. It's being pulled on a flat-bed here, so
that we don't actually get to see it driving along on its own steam, but the
far bigger story is that the crossover EV is caked in dried mud, suggesting
some sort of offroad testing took place just prior to its sighting.

Of course, why shouldn't the Tesla Model X be engaging in some assessment of
offroad prowess? We know that the pure-electric SUV will have essentially
the same all-wheel drive system as on the Tesla Model S "D," standard towing
capability, and most intriguing, the independent control of each of the two
drive motors could function as a virtual locking central e-differential.

The very next day, still another video surfaced, showing the Tesla Model X
driving the streets of Berkeley, California. What's most interesting about
this sighting is that the utility vehicle prototype is laden with some
unidentified external sensors. Chances are, these sensors are simply tied to
the Tesla Model X's own implementation of the automaker's "autopilot"
semi-autonomous system, but Autoblog astutely points out that Tesla Motors
fans have been surprised with unforeseen new features before.

As such, we invite your wildest, most inconceivable predictions.
