The magazine reports that Apple is interested in the car’s carbon fiber body, and that negotiations have been ongoing since the fall of 2014, but that no deal is in place. Previously Apple had approached the German automaker BMW last year for similar reasons according to the report; however BMW upon hearing insisted that the meetings and talks were regarding the Cupertino tech giant preparing an operating system for the i3 models. The regulations will establish the requirements that manufacturers must meet to certify that their autonomous vehicle has been successfully tested, meets certain safety requirements, and is ready for the general public to operate on public roads. DMV conducted an initial public workshop on the deployment regulations in March 2014. A second public workshop was conducted at DMV Headquarters on January 27, 2015. This public workshop engaged the interested public in a focused discussion on the requirements of Vehicle Code §38750 subdivision (c) , specifically, certifications by manufacturers that the autonomous technology can be operated safely on public streets by the general public, and how the department will determine the validity of those certifications.
