The very first A&W restaurant is getting another facelift. If you have driven past Lodi’s famous landmark on East Lodi Avenue, you may have noticed the absence of the carhop canopy and a large chunk of the parking lot. Over the next two to three weeks, the parking lot will be repaved and organized for a more upscale carhop including solar panels and electric car charging stations. “We’re going to have an impromptu drive-thru planter with a menu board. Drivers can continue around to the back side and wait in the shade of the canopy. It’s like a carhop to go,” said A&W Owner Peter Knight. Lodians who grew up in Lodi know the system well. A&W employees will continue to bring out meals to people’s cars after the renovations. The old parking lot — and the plumbing underneath it — had been laid down in the 1960s, he said, and was in need of a refresh. Even the old canopy had begun to suffer a bit with time, as it had signs of dry rot in the wood, he said. Lenzi Construction will build a new canopy with six car stations and solar panels. “This A&W will be the first business in Lodi and first A&W restaurant with solar panels and the first business to have electric charging stations,” Knight said. Knight is planning for the construction to be finished in time for Free Root Beer Float Day on August 6. That night will also be a cruise night. Free root beer floats will be available by request from 2 p.m. to closing time that day. Celebrations will include the famous A&W bear, who will help collect donations in a root beer barrel for the Wounded Warrior Project. The overall goal for A&W restaurants across the country will be to raise more than $300,000 for the nonprofit. “Customers in Lodi have always been very supportive in donating to the Wounded Warrior Project,” Knight said. During these next few weeks, there are still opportunities to park on the dirt section of the parking lot while construction is not going on. Otherwise, signs may be posted advising customers to park across the street in the Smart & Final parking lot. “We appreciate everyone being patient with us during construction,” Knight said.
