Plugging in for L1 charging is no different from plugging in a space heater.

So it threw the breakers. Big deal.  Just do what you'd do if your power saw 
or heater threw a breaker -- reset the breaker and find a different place to 
plug in.

I'm skeptical of the "damaged" receptacles, though it's possible if the 
recepts were old and didn't grip the plugs tight enough.  This can cause 
overheating at the plug.

Why do ignorant writers have to call every electrical fault a "short 
circuit"?

EVs have been similarly received (and they've often been deliberately 
sabotaged) time after time when fleet drivers have been required to use 
them.  How much of this is basic anti-EV sentiment and how much is simple 
resentment caused by being forced to change, I can't say, but I've seen it 
many times over the last 40 years.
