The study by the University of Ontario Institute of Technology suggests greenhouse gas emissions could be reduced by more than 100 million tonnes by 2050. “In 2050, we’ve got to be thinking about autonomous self-driving vehicles, we’ve got to be thinking (about the fact that) we’re going to have another three million people,” study author Daniel Hoornweg said. Partially funded by [onga.ca], the study concentrates on the Greater Toronto Area’s highways, especially Hwys. 401 and 407. The study found congestion costs Toronto residents around $6 billion every year “due to higher fuel consumption, increased health-care costs, and eroded real-estate values.” It urges the creation of an extensive rapid transit system mixing buses with electric vehicle lots at major interchanges. “You could just pick up an electric vehicle ... and it would take you to your home or the office,” Hoornweg said. A system like this “would make it easier to get around” during, for instance, the Pan Am Games, he noted. The study also suggests introducing natural gas for heavy-duty trucking and buses along with electric vehicles. Such changes could result in savings of $76 billion by 2050 in Ontario, it says.
