A Kalgoorlie entrepreneur is making plans to import a solar-powered hybrid
vehicle known as an ELF.

Tim Neeson runs his own IT business in Kalgoorlie, but he's also a man of
many ideas, his latest being a plan to import hybrid electric vehicles to
the Goldfields.

"They're halfway between a car and a bike, they come in one or two seater
models and there's room in the back for shopping" said Tim.

The ELF is manufactured by an American start-up called Organic Transit, and
it runs on both electricity generated from solar panels built into it's
roof, and pedal power.

The ELF is marketed as a way of reducing your carbon footprint while also
remaining physically active.

The three-wheeled vehicle is built around a capsule that protects the driver
from the elements, allowing them to be able to sit, and store luggage in the
back.

Tim said they're aimed to function as a complimentary transport option for
people who live close to work and local services, used to make small,
regular trips.

He says the vehicles can travel around 30 kilometres on one charge, at about
50 kilometres per hour and they're ideal in sunny flat places.

Tim acknowledges the challenges of trying to get a project like this off the
ground in a place like Kalgoorlie, where traffic isn't a big problem and car
culture is deeply ingrained.

"You would think that 80 per cent of people would laugh at it, but if 20 per
cent of people like it, there's a market," he says.

Tim's said his approach to implementing an idea like this is to always
involve people at a grass roots level.

"For me the best way to get an idea out there is just to talk to people; go
and meet people, show them what you're working on, find out what people are
working on and what excites them.

"Just trying to talk ideas and get people excited about the things I'm into
and hopefully that leads to a better community and better outcomes."
