Tesla is now selling used cars online for thousands of dollars less
By JP Mangalindan [2015/05/01]

Last week, Tesla began selling used versions of its popular Model S for over
$10,000 less new models.

If you've ever fancied a Tesla Model S but balked at the price, now's your
chance to score one for significantly less — provided that you don't mind
it's used.

The high-end electric car maker quietly started selling used vehicles last
week for the first time on its website, according to the Wall Street
Journal. Now the option to "Buy Pre-Owned" shows up alongside the choice to
buy a brand-spanking-new model. Visit the new pre-owned section, here.

Vehicles for sale are up to 2-and-a-half years old, roughly dating back to
when Tesla began selling its popular sedan. Most models for sale lack
all-wheel drive, a feature the company introduced in April.

But if you don't mind zipping around without all-wheel drive, the cost
savings is pretty substantial: The cheapest used Model S hovers around
$63,000 — about $12,000 or so less than the most affordable option for a new
vehicle, before factoring in things like a federal tax credit and state
purchase incentive. Tesla also offers a four-year or 50,000 limited warranty
on its used vehicles.

For Tesla, this marks the first time it has ever sold used cars.

For Tesla, this marks the first time it has ever sold used cars. Unlike
other car manufacturers, Tesla doesn't use independent auto dealers, so it
won't have to share a cut from sales. That's a boon for the company, not
just because used car sales give it another substantial revenue stream, but
also because used car sales generally offer higher profit margins.

The move follows Tesla's splashy event Thursday when founder and CEO Elon
Musk unveiled his Tesla Energy plan, which includes a new $3,500 battery
called the Powerwall for storing energy and powering the home, as well as
the the Powerpack, a server-sized, industrial-level version.

Report: Tesla will begin selling used cars online
Jonathan Marino and Bryan Logan May 1, 2015

Tesla is reportedly looking to get into the used-car business.

The Wall Street Journal is reporting that Elon Musk's electric car company
will begin selling used automobiles via its website.

"Like other luxury car makers, Tesla offers an extended, 4-year or
50,000-mile limited warranty on its used vehicles," The Journal reported.

The company already sells preowned Tesla Roadsters through its site, so it
follows that some Model S units coming off lease would land there as well.

Elon Musk has proven he has a vested interest in keeping Teslas on the road.
The company continues to develop its network of Tesla-branded Supercharger
stations throughout the US, Europe and Asia-Pacific regions. Those stations
allow owners to recharge their vehicles "in minutes instead of hours," the
company says.

There's also Tesla's battery swap program, which makes that recharge process
even faster, thus addressing one of the arguments surrounding the
practicality of electric vehicle ownership: range anxiety.

It's interesting to note that even if Tesla didn't resell its own vehicles,
other sellers are already doing it. As of this writing, there were about 300
used Tesla Model S listings on Auto Trader, from private sellers and
non-Tesla dealerships.

It has been a big week for Tesla. About 14 hours before news of its
burgeoning pre-owned program got out, Musk announced Tesla Energy.

That will have the company producing a home battery, called Powerwall, which
stores solar energy and lets customers save grid electricity to use during
peak usage hours.

Tesla Is Now Selling Pre-Owned Vehicles Online
Nicole Conlan 5/02/15

Tesla Motors Inc. has very quietly started to sell used cars online,
following in the footsteps of larger car companies. Its new certified
vehicle program brings down the staggering costs of one of their electric
cars while still ensuring manufacturer maintenance and repairs.

Most of the cars that are on Tesla’s website were previously owned by people
who have since traded up to the AWD Model S. Soon, this stockpile will also
include leased Teslas.

One hiccup in this new plan is physical storage space. Currently, nearly
every Tesla sitting in a showroom is a demo model. When these pre-owned cars
begin to stack up, Tesla will need a place to put all of them. They’ll
likely be held at a private Tesla-owned facility. Once a buyer orders a car
online, they’ll be available for pickup.

It means you won’t be able to kick the tires, but also that you won’t have
to deal with any slimy used car salesmen.

Tesla Motors Inc Meets Rising Demand By Selling Used Cars On Website

Tesla Motors begins Model S certified pre-owned sales on its website in
attempts to answer demand hikes, reports The Wall Street Journal

As rumored earlier, Tesla Motors Inc is selling used versions of its luxury
sedan to customers through an online registration at Tesla’s website.
According to the Wall Street Journal (WSJ), the certified pre-owned (CPO)
sales program hit off just a week ago at Tesla’s website, which would
provide the Palo Alto-based automaker to fill in the supply shortage.

The electric vehicle (EV) maker would make the used car re-sellable after
checking for reliability and maintenance standards. In order to develop
customer confidence into the program, the automaker would also provide a
50,000-mile or 4-year warranty on its second-hand cars, according to the
WSJ.

The publication further reports that the customers can get used luxury cars
at a lesser price than ones offered by private or independent dealers at
AutoTrader.com. Currently, the scale of CPO sales program is limited to 11
areas in US, according to Tesla Website. Tesla Motors has not yet marketed
for CPO program at any forum, as the automaker is known for delivering
vehicles as per order, but that seems to have changed now.

The EV manufacturer also has its residual value guarantee (RVG) program,
which allows Tesla owners an option to sell their vehicle to Tesla after 3
years at a 50% residual value. This RVG program would complement the
automaker’s recent move to sell used cars; assisting to take back used
vehicles directly from customers of the RVG program and make it available
for CPO sales. Tesla vehicles are considered to have the highest residual
value compared to rest of the EVs in the market, as the company claims its
vehicles have better residual value than any other luxury brands such as,
Audi, BMW or Mercedes.

As the automaker is growing from a niche-market car company to a large scale
car-seller, certainly the company is changing its selling practices. Many
analysts also think Tesla to adopt the traditional dealership business model
for selling its cars once the automaker rolls out its mass market Model 3 in
2017. Currently, Tesla follows a direct sale model at several states in US.
