Yes that makes sense. Thanks for pointing it out.
I'll add that a taxibot could replace public transit in medium to large
cities too, during slack hours. At the point where a bus is doing a
milk run and only has a few passengers, it seems it would be cheaper and
faster to dispatch taxibots. Integrating the two systems have great
potential.

Peri,
I think the replacement of public transit is presented wrong,
because a detailed reading of the article shows that they actually
recommend a combination of taxibots with large-scale public transit,
since the taxi is the best last-mile distributor of people arriving
by fast/long distance mass transportation.
The "replace transit" quote comes from what I believe is a minor
statement where the report suggests that in small to medium towns,
the taxibot could completely replace (local) public transportation,
which I agree to as public transportation often needs some economies
of scale to make sense, that is why there is so little public
transportation
available in rural places today anyway.
I have no clue why the replacement of public transit was taken out of
context
and presented so prominently when the report clearly did *not* suggest
that,
so I am assuming that the article writer has an agenda.
That is why I put in my message subject only the private car
replacement.
Hope this clarifies.

Yes, I think there's lots of potential for self driving cars, hopefully
in the form of EVs. I think the author is wrong that it eliminates the
need for public transit, though. Maybe I don't understand something
but
just because a car drives itself doesn't mean it can hold as many
people
as a train. Yes, I realize they could drive practically with bumpers
touching but there's still lots of wasted space.
Besides, they also need to travel somewhere after dropping off their
passenger(s). They may not need to park in the urban centers, but
surely they will need to park during slack hours. Parking would still
be needed but in less expensive areas.
Anyway, I can see them working very well in combination with transit.
Take transit near to your destination and a driverless taxi will
complete your trip quickly. Or take transit in the morning and,
spontaneously, stay too late to take transit home. No problem, an
autonomous will come and get you.
