I now finally had time to watch the PowerWall introduction video
and he indeed says that the DC/DC converter is included, so I am
presuming that this allows a direct integration (supply) with
solar panels and delivers MPPT for the panels plus BMS for the
battery, so only the (bi-directional?) grid-tie inverter is needed
to feed the grid (and battery charging at night and stand-alone backup)
or just a simple inverter for off-grid only...

Xantrex used to have a combination grid-tie and backup inverter,
but just the certification and installation hassles were killing them.

My guess: a solar maximum power point tracker is a DC-DC converter, something
we are all familiar with. Using something like that to charge the Tesla battery
from the solar panels and then discharge it to the solar inverter would make
for a useful upgrade to an existing system but not something that would be
needed in every deployment case. On the other hand adapting existing designs to
use LiPo rather than Lead Acid batteries and taking them to the mass market
would make sense if someone were selling a very affordable battery.

I think Musk just disrupted the battery industry.
