Cute, but no cigar.

To charge a typical EV to the average 40 mile daily range, you can do it
with 6 well positioned 300W solar panels. Over a 6 hour average sun day.
Cost about $1000 for the solar panels (at 50 cents a watt). Far cheaper
than the complexity they propose.

Again, I am not denigrating their creativity, (great idea), just pointing
out the alternative.

As a data point, the 1 square meter of solar panels on the roof of my Prius
in 2007 cost about $2400 (for the plastic covered slightly bendable ones).
Those same 1 square meter solar panels STILL COST about $1800 today. The
price of anything but HOME solar has not gone down. No economies of scale.

So the point is, specialty cells for car roofs will NEVER reach the cost
point of bazillions of roof-top solar cells that are now down to under 50
cents a watt in house-roof-top-format.

Shucks, solar panels are so cheap now, they cost less than windows and it
make sense to even put them on the NW, NE and even NORTH sides of your house
if your roof pitch is low.

And the 20% advantage of having TRACKING arrays is quite easily offset by
just having 20% more panels at 10% of the cost of the tracking system.

Never underestimate the advantage of the KISS principle.

Bob

Pretty slick idea using Fresnel lens to concentrate the solar energy and
moving the vehicle to stay in the sweet spot. Lawrence Rhodes
