According to a study by Drew Shindell at Duke University, when taking
into account the environmental effects of burning coal to generate
electricity and similarly for other fuels, the true cost of running an
EV is about 50% compared to running a typical mid range sedan. In the
brief (but perhaps in the actual study) it doesn't say how a typical EV
compares to a Prius, but I'll guess it's at worst on par.
Coal is the worst case. The comparison is hugely more favorable if
other energy sources are used to produce electricity.
