Photo submitted ] It’s no joke that Malibu is unique and I’m very blessed to be able to bring you the latest of what car companies are doing. I get to test the best and see what these forward-thinking companies are coming up with daily. But every time a car company sends me an electric car to poke around PCH on, I get really excited. The future is here, right now, and it’s in my garage. Or, at least it was. This week’s Ride of the Week was the 2015 Kia Soul EV. An electric blue over white with a boxy industrial frame that says, “I can.” And it does. In fact, what I liked most about this car was that it had everything. It’s well-priced, has a rear camera, iPod, Sirius, heated seats and steering wheel and was a blast to drive with a 95-mile overall charge. Ridiculous fun. Sure, you wouldn’t go to Vegas in this. And Kia knows it. But as an around town car for us here in Malibu or something cool for your kids, it’s totally awesome. On weekends, I like to explore. I did that as a kid with my siblings and we just went out in any direction to see what we could discover. No rules, no great plan, just an inspired idea to discover. And each week, I get these cars and do the same thing. I may go to see my Pop, get Malibu Yogurt, La Salsa, CVS candy or see my friend Jo in Serra Retreat. (She likes cars, too.) Or, my wife and I may head up the coast and turn up a street we’ve never been. It’s just the idea of discovering something new and I think it’s my favorite thing in life. The SoulEV is the perfect vehicle for this. Unpretentious, humble, quick, nimble, well-built and just a joy to drive. And did I mention quiet? Quiet like Malibou Lake quiet. Quiet like your wife/husband isn’t snoring for the first time in weeks, quiet. A few weeks back I launched my new MicroSeries on Youtube called Car Stories. I interview Malibuites and get their best story on camera. It’s fun, fresh and makes me feel like I’m exploring the town. We get so caught up in having to “do” things that we forget to “be.” Just live. Just have fun and act like a kid. We don’t give ourselves permission to do that enough, but it’s a choice. Some car companies understand this. They build and market a car that promotes joy. But, again, it’s a choice. Some choose ego and some choose eco. I respect both, but for what we really want in life being peace, the SoulEV really fits the bill. I had a hard time giving this one back. But hey, if one of you read this and decide to buy an electric car to keep Malibu green, then I’ll volunteer to buy coffee for a ride. Done. ... Congratulations, Kia.
