TL,DR: when you send a message to the EVDL, please try to remember to delete
all the TO and CC addresses except [email protected]. If you want to send
copies to other people, put their addresses in the BCC field.

=====

IN DETAIL: For some reason I haven't figured out, lately we've been having
problems with messages being sent with too many TO and CC names.

This perturbs the listserver, because one of the characteristics of spammy
messages is that some are addressed to lots of folks. The overeager server,
thus alerted, holds those for me to review, which often delays them (I don't
watch for this stuff 24/7).

I don't know for sure, but it's possible that a few messages that also waved
additional i-might-be-spam flags never even got to me for review, but got
flushed into the bit bucket and subsequently sloshed down the bit drain. :-(

So wot's the deel with the extra addresses?

Weeeelll, part (most?) of the reason for them is the way the listserver now
has to tweak the FROM addresses in order to make AOL, Yahoo, AT&T and a few
other mail operations happy. This is all a bit complicated, so if you're
interested, see the archive for some discussion of how it all went down a
few months ago. Basically those mail operations broke every email
discussion list in the known world, and didn't give a fig. We all had to
duck their spam-spasms.

But I'm not bitter, no. :-\

Anyway, depending on how your mail system responds to these FROMs, your
reply might end up addressed by default to both the list and the original
writer.

That's not really the problem, though. That we can handle.

The current problem arose more recently. I haven't researched it much yet,
but it appears that a few mail systems seem to have started adding an extra
copy of the list address ([email protected]).

Most messages work out just fine. But now and then we'll get one addressed
something like this :

TO: [email protected], [email protected], [email protected]

The server reads that as too many TO addresses, and pitches a feedmenospam-
fit.

So, when you write a post to the EVDL, please try to watch for extra
(extraneous) addresses in the TO and CC fields, and delete them.

The safest practice is to address your posts only to [email protected]. If
you want to send copies to others, put them in the BCC field, not the CC
field.

Thanks.
