The record-breaking EV procession took place at the National Drive Electric Week event in Cupertino, Calif. **Video by Frank Mokaya/SF Bay Leafs ] Start those patriotic cheers, because the U.S. can now claim the record for most electric cars in one place. A judge from the Guinness Book of World Records certified on Saturday that 507 electric cars were gathered at an event in Cupertino, California, beating the total set at an event in Germany earlier this year. Only battery-electric cars were counted toward the total. While there were many plug-in hybrids on hand, the record only applies to vehicles that use electricity as their sole source of energy. Even electric bikes were left out of the tally, because they have a secondary source of power in the form of pedals. There was still a wide variety of vehicles present, including examples of the Nissan Leaf, Tesla Model S, Toyota RAV4 EV, and Kia Soul EV. Also participating was Stella, a solar-powered "energy-positive car" built by students from the Eindhoven University of Technology in The Netherlands. According to its creators, this experimental vehicle can absorb twice as much energy through its solar panels as it needs per day. The rally was part of National Drive Electric Week, a series of nationwide events that promote electric cars. Organized by advocacy group Plug In America in concert with other national organizations like the Sierra Club and Electric Auto Association, National Drive Electric Week encompassed 152 events in 35 states, as well as Canada, Italy, and The Netherlands. The Cupertino rally was organized by the San Francisco bayLEAFs and the Silicon Valley chapter of the Electric Auto Association. The 507-car total achieved there surpasses the 481 cars gathered at a rally in Stuttgartt, Germany, earlier this year. Organizers originally claimed to have assembled 507 vehicles--which the California event would have merely tied--but Guinness would not recognize that figure. This new record was set during Plug-in America’s National Drive Electric Week, at a time when EV sales continue to climb for Nissan ] Given the fact the Guinness people where in attendance, and festivities set up to celebrate, this new record was expected to be a shoe-in, but it turned out a little closer than expected – as the previous mark was 481 vehicles (Stuttgart, Germany earlier this year). The number could have been a little higher, but this event was for 100% electric vehicles and some disqualifications were made during the event for also having alternative powertrains (gas, pedal, etc), while some others failed to complete the planned route. The ride was part of the 42nd Annual Silicon Valley Electric Vehicle Rally, the event was billed as the “nation’s largest electric vehicle event during National Drive Electric Week” Still, 507 is a pretty great turnout, and shows that EV adoption in the United States and around the world continues to soar. The new record was set last Saturday at a National Drive Electric Week event in Cupertino, Silicon Valley. The previous record dated from last May when 481 EV’s met in Germany. The parade included only pure electric vehicles, no hybrids. Even electric bicycles did not qualify, because they were not solely dependent on electricity for propulsion… Among the 507 vehicles were 16 electric motorcycles, mostly models from Zero and two Lightnings. There were no Brammos in the parade. Terry Hershner and his Iron Butt Zero were also in attendance. The blue bike in the photos is the Lightning 218 model, while the red bike is their “production” “commuter” model, which does not have a price or even an official name yet. While Lightning is still working on finalizing the production of the 218, their “commuter” model appears to be a prototype of a model to come. Electric car owners from all of Scandinavia came together on Sunday to highlight green transportation and set some world records in the process. As part of an event showcasing Copenhagen as the 2014 European Green Capital, organisers reported that 166 electric vehicles crossed the Øresund Bridge between Malmö and Copenhagen. Although they are still awaiting an official count for their effort to create the world's longest electric car parade, the event organisers say that they easily secured the Guinness World Record for the ‘most electric cars on a roof top parking lot’, the ‘largest spiral made with electric cars’ and the ‘most electric cars on a bridge between two countries’. The parking records were set at the Field’s shopping centre in the Copenhagen district of Amager. The organisers of Sunday’s event said that it was a fun way to bring attention to the idea of a ‘green motorway’ connecting the Øresund Region with Hamburg, Germany and to promote electric car ownership. “We need to get people to pay attention to the electric car because it is non-polluting and quiet. Before summer there just 400 registered electric cars out of the 160,000 registered vehicles in Copenhagen, or about 0.25 percent. That is way too few,” Jakob Hougaard, the deputy chairman of the City of Copenhagen’s technical and environment committee, said. In the world record attempts, a contingent of Danish and Norwegian electric car owners crossed from Copenhagen into Malmö, where they met up with the annual Swedish-run event, the Öresund Electric Car Rally for a return trip over the Øresund Bridge. Although the numbers still need to be verified, the previous record for the longest electric car parade was set in Japan in 2010 with 100 participants.
