Opel CEO confirms a new electric vehicle following Ampera axing

Could be based on GM's 200 mile EV

Opel CEO Karl-Thomas Neumann has released a series of tweets confirming the
company's commit to "eMobility" following news that the Ampera will be axed.

In three successive tweets, Neumann confirmed the company will offer a new
electric vehicle as part of their plan to launch 27 new models by 2018. The
executive went on to say "After the eventual run-out of the current
generation Ampera, we'll introduce a successor product in the electric
vehicle segment."

His latter comment seems to suggest the successor will be a pure electric
vehicle instead of a range-extended model like the Ampera. This could imply
the company is going to offer a version of GM's upcoming electric vehicle
which will have a range in excess of 200 miles (321 km). The model is slated
to be launched in 2016 and cost around $30,000 (€22,269).

Chevrolet To Build Pure Electric Sonic?

Hot off the heels of General Motors’ announcement that the Opel Ampera will
cease to exist, a buzz has been brewing surrounding the latest General
Motors electric vehicle. It has been said that a pure electric Chevrolet
Sonic will be sold right here in the United States.

The proposed Sonic EV will allegedly run off of the new LG Chem battery (the
same company that supplies the Volt) due to arrive in 2016. The Sonic EV is
expected to have a range of 200 miles. Compare that with the Spark EV, which
has a range of just 82 miles.

General Motors will be able to gain regulatory credits if it builds the pure
EV in America, leading many to believe that its birthplace will be Michigan.
The Spark EV, in contrast, is ineligible because it is built in South Korea.

Possible Sonic EV May Boast 200 Mile Range

LG Chem, the battery supplier for the Chevy Volt, recently announced that it
would be developing a 200-mile-range electric vehicle with an unnamed
automaker. But given that the company already, you know, supplies the Volt’s
battery, it’s not much of a stretch of the imagination to assume that Chevy
is this unnamed automaker.

Then, The Truth About Cars came out shortly after with an exclusive report
that Chevy will be adding to its lineup a Sonic EV, capable of 200 electric
miles (sound familiar?). The Sonic EV will likely hit the scene in 2016 and
will be built in Michigan, which will earn Chevy its regulatory credits
doled out for selling a pure EV made in the U.S. (The Chevy Spark EV is
built in Korea—and gets a range of 82 miles—and thus does not meet the
requirements.)

The Chevy Spark EV gets a range of 82 miles, while the Sonic EV is projected
at 200.

A Sonic EV capable of 200 miles is absolutely mind-blowing, but it isn’t
entirely unexpected. General Motors has gone on record saying that it plans
to compete with Tesla when the automaker unleashes its entry-level Model X
with a 200-mile range. It is likely, then, that the Sonic EV will be Tesla’s
newest competitor, both in performance and price, and just as likely that
the Sonic EV is the secret car that LG Chem alluded to recently.

Let’s just hope that the Sonic EV will be available in more than California
and Oregon. Currently, the Spark EV is only available in those two states.
