Having been involved with the Open Revolt project, I'm a little biased. But I think it would be ideal for this project since you would have access to the source code and hardware schematics. That would allow you to either modify the software or hardware to suit your needs.

If you're more adventurous, others have made their own power section to handle higher current and voltage, so that's certainly possible.
