This considerably increases the total length of a vehicle, and makes it very difficult to back up. I wonder if a simpler design would work instead: a very short hitch which allows some up-and-down flexibility, but no side-to-side motion, and where the trailer itself rides on a single swivel wheel. This would significantly reduce the length of the trailer+hitch combination, and should eliminate the problem of backing up. Also, I saw that the BMW i3 has an optional 700 cc gasoline generator to extend the range of the vehicle. I have been unable to find the size and weight of such as engine+generator combination, so let me know if you have that information:.
