Electric car owners love data. Many choose to plug in to cut spending, cut
fuel consumption, and cut emissions, and all of these savings can be
quantified.

The myEV logger and app from MyCarma hopes to do just that. Already tested
on commercial fleets, MyCarma plans to offer the system to individual buyers
as a universal way to log plug-in car data.

The hardware is based on two existing devices from MyCarma: The FleetCarma
data logger, and the CrossChasm Open XC logger. The best of both will be
combined into one device.

The former provides the capability to record vehicle data, while the latter
features Bluetooth and an Open XC software platform that can bridge car and
device operating systems to transmit that data.

However, that data can vary from manufacturer to manufacturer, each of which
uses slightly different signals to connote different pieces of information.
MyCarma claims to have created a standardized format for its device. The
company says it will be compatible with most popular models, including the
Chevrolet Volt, Nissan LEAF, and Tesla Model S.

All of this information will be available through an app (iOS and Android
only) that includes trip energy-consumption summaries, vehicle lifetime
energy-consumption summaries, and the ability to share on social media.

One interesting feature is a QR-code window sticker, which other users can
scan to tell if it’s alright to unplug a car at a public charging station.
The idea is to combat negative emotions like “charge rage” that seem to crop
up around electric-car charging.

The myEV system isn’t ready for primetime yet, though. The developers say
the firmware and hardware has been prototyped, and an Indiegogo crowdfunding
campaign is underway to raise enough money for production.

As this article was published, $1,145 of the $25,000 goal had been raised,
with 42 days left in the campaign.
