The all-electric Xtreme Roadster has a top speed of almost 100 MPH and can accelerate from 0 to 60 MPH in about 7 seconds! This is not the electric car of yesteryear! ] An electric sports car has to be the ultimate motoring thrill. Able to make the most of the instant torque of a battery drivetrain, we’ve seen a few electric roadster concepts in recent years. Over in Tennessee, in the US, one new concept has caught our eye. Revealed at last month’s EarthFest in Knoxville; Tennessee native, Shockwave Motors revealed its new Defiant Xtreme EV Roadster; a three-seat model capable of a range of up to 200 miles and a top speed on 100mph. The new model has been developed with aerodynamics in mind, with the majority of the vehicle’s weight over the wide-track, rear wheels, for a low centre of gravity. A three-wheel model, Shockwave has played plenty of attention to the issue of safety, despite the vehicle’s shortage of wheels, with the front wheel designed to fold up and over an obstacle in event of a collision. The tubular steel frame is supported a roll bar surrounding the rear passengers. The high performance li-on prismatic battery is protected by sheet steel and is situated over the rear wheels to make it almost impossible to for road debris to penetrate the battery. “After many years of research and development we are pleased to be able to revel the pre-production version of our electric vehicle, the Defiant Xtreme EV3 Roadster. The roadster is a unique combination of aerodynamic design with an ‘old school look’, coupled with ease of manufacturability enabling us to bring an electric vehicle to the market that is affordable and fun to drive,” said John McMillian, CEO of Shockwave Motors at the reveal of the new electric roadster. Recharging of the new electric roadster takes between 8-9 hours from a standard 110 volt outlet and is also compatible with Level 2 charging for a quicker charge. Shockwave Motors, Inc. has already begun to take manufacturing reservations and expects to begin limited production later in the summer of both the standard Defiant and the Defiant Xtreme models. Prices are expected to be in the region of $24,950 before any state or federal incentives are deducted. As the model is just about to begin production in the US, there are no plans currently to bring the model to the UK, unfortunately.
