In the same paper he goes into using a battery to excite the windings of a
series/shunt motor to add regenerative braking and get a better power curve.

He wrote early texts for electrical engineering principles and started the
first EE college curriculum in the US at Union College in upstate NY but is
not generally as well known as his contemporaries: Edison, Tesla, and
Einstein.

Very nice! Thanks for posting this. It's amazing how little has changed in nearly 100 years.

Steinmetz is a hero of mine. He was not a big showman like Edison etc, but was truly a genius, and a very good person as well. One comment of his that I like:

"An engineer can tell you if it will work before you build it. After it's built, any damned fool can tell."
