It's a bit outside of the scope of this list, but have you taken a look
at the MSI with a tool like Orca? Perhaps you could generate an .mst
(transform file) that stops the registry action in question?

I could write an install script that backs up all the keys before
running the installer, then restore them after. Does anyone have a
