I haven't tried it in IE, but installing ESR 52 immediately fixes the problems with the random characters. I'm relieved that it's not solely related to our older version of vSphere, but that doesn't help either.
I don't know if there are any Firefox developers out there who use vSphere regularly. It's unlikely that VMWare will fix that bug for an older version and it is somehow related to the new quantum engine. But thanks for the hint, I may have to use IE with vSphere for the time being, since I don't want to go back to ESR 52, ESR 60 is so much faster, it actually hurts to use the old Firefox.
