Hi Brian,
We push extensions and Firefox installation/updates using WAPT, an
open-source solution for software deployment using locally stored packages.
Here is an example of uBlock extensions for Mozilla Firefox package :

It allows you to install the extensions in Program Files silently on the
system. It then installs the extension in every user profiles on the
computer using Mozilla's mozprofile python library (included in the
package).
WAPT can also be used to deploy Mozilla Firefox and profile preferences
(proxy, privacy settings, locked prefs, etc), I'll write an article
about that in a few days.

XPI file of the extension in "C:\Program Files (x86)\Mozilla
Firefox\browser\extensions" however the extension will be disabled until the end
user manually enables it. Furthermore, if the user attempts to install the same plugin
for their user profile, installation will silently fail because and the plugin will
remain disabled.
In our environment we control Firefox updates so updating autoconfig.cfg isn't
an issue.
