We don't wanted to use ff 64bit because of performance considerations.

In our company we have Linux and windows clients.
The used linux-distro is switching to 64bit. Because of missing 32bit multimedia codecs and plugins the linux admins want to use 64bit ff.

We assumed, like Heiko wrote earlier before, that 64bit ff on linux and windows behaves the same (have NPAPI support) and therefore tried to use 64bit windows ff as well, to minimize differences between our linux and windows systems.

Because of the missing NPAPI support of the 64bit windows ff we will stay on 32-bit for now, because we have no "real" reason for switching to 64bit. Parallelly we will try to replace all used NPAPI plugins so we are prepared when NPAPI support is removed from 32bit ff as well.
And maybee we can than switch to 64bit ff on windows.

And generally, why not using 64bit software on a 64bit windows?!
Aside from the special ff case and ms office, there should be no reason to stay on 32bit software on a 64bit os.

Aditionally we have the middle-term goal to switch from 32bit jre to 64bit jre and this truly because of performance improvements. At the moment we can't "switch" (we install both) because of the many java applets that are used and therefore we still need to install 32bit jre, to get the 32bit jre plugin for firefox. We will also try to replace this applets.

The problem is to get replacements for all the java applets and all the firefox plugins. Because we are dependent on many, many different manufactuers. We hope that, if NPAPI support is dropped in RR first, many "big players" will begin to work on replacements and will be ready when NPAPI is dropped in ESR.

Best regards
