With an app store model you have a better chance.  The reason you didn't
have a community is that, you aren't in charge of distributing the app.  So
you have no way of creating a community that easily.

Because we are changing how apps are distributed, we have a much better
chance of having 1:1 relationships with the community.  So, you should port
to GTK3, and making it an xdg-app.
