Many years ago Model Engineer's workshop had an article on upgrading the sheet metal hold down springs on one of these: https://www.jettools.com/us/en/p/sbr-30m-30-3-in-1-shear-brake-and-roll/756031 I wrote the magazine to get in contact with the author since the details of spring sizes were not really included. He used 3 I believe with the middle one wrapped counter clockwise to avoid binding with the others. The point was that when shearing the force on the metal would tend to pull it unless it was suitably pressed against the base. Unfortunately the information wasn't available as the author had passed on.
