Yes, the xy can be done in gcode or with a boring head. If gcode, needs 
low and well compensated backlash. I think my G0704 can do it, although 
spindle torque might be a bit puny for bigger holes implying faster 
surface speeds. Tip contours might be a problem at hole sizes less than 
say 3/4" (2cm) in diameter, but you'll see the boring bar flexing as the 
lower face of the chip starts dragging in smaller holes. I expect it 
would continue to cut, but would take more spring passes to get to the 
final size.
