Perhaps you have forgotten that the ER style nut is a loooong ways from 
symmetrical internally?

My guess is that the spindle is balanced w/o the nut, and that the nut is 
separately balanced. Or should be...

I have one that ER11 that has a setscrew in the sleeve above the slinger 
flange, But I've never loosened it, just made sure it was tight.  The 
other looks like it may be a shrink fit.  Both run very close to true.
