I crunched a disc a while ago, and it was hell for six months or more. A few things I found that helped. One was, we have a piece of furniture that is just the right height. I stand next to it and put my palms over the edge and lift myself up until my heels are off the floor, and try to hold that as long as I can (just a couple minutes). The idea is to let the spine relax and sag, kind of like doing the VAX-D treatment at home.

The other thing was that I would be totally hunched over and barely able to move after driving to work, or back. I found that if I rolled up a jacket and jammed it in the angle of the car seat, between seat and back, and then sat on that, driving caused much less trouble. Something about changing the angle of the pelvis/lower back.
