It depends where yiu buy the pump.   ANything sold in a US retail store is
going to be 110 volts not 220.     But even 110 is enough to worry about.
The pumps are safe.  They are 100% potted in epoxy.  Keeping the water out
of the electic part does not depend in a gasket or seal.

Still, you really want to put the pumps on a GFCI outlet.

If you are realy worried about 110 volts and water then go to the lacal
West Marine (or any good marine hardware store) store and buy a bilge pump
that runs on 12 volts
In this catogory "Rule" is the best known brand.  They are very reliable
and work on 12 volts.    I've rune thes for years in salt water
and never a corosion problem.

You also just might find that controling a 12V DC pump from a computer is
easier then controlling a 110 volt AC pump.  for 12VDCasimple MOSFET switch
is needed.

You can get fancier and install a flow meter and use it to detect pump
failures.
