I am doing exactly that here, with a 40yo 1 hp motor I put fresh bearings
in and a 1.5 hp rated inverter thats said to be a clone, purchasable off
ebay for around $90 today. Running it on household 254 v single phase,
same as the clothes dryer. Not a really smart inverter, but it has
enough tweakability to see to it the nameplate FLA is never exceeded,
even at 10 hz out, up to about 150 hz, at which point the inductance of
the windings has it down to a very low torque as the coil currents are
about 1/4 what they at at 60 hz. So I can go from 35 revs in low gear,
to about 700 revs, still in low gear. Due to bronze bearings in the
spindle, it won't pull 1200 revs in 3rd, even less in top gear w/o
loosening the bearing caps a lot.

It might Andy, but it won't gain any magic, make your morning coffee
either. Use it like its meant to be used and it will do the job. Rigid
tapping will quite a bit slower than on a mill, but thats the weight of
a 50lb chuck being hard to reverse quickly.
