And thats apparently the case, you have the smooth "back" of the device 
toward the gears, assuming the gear is inside this cover in the pix.

So I have it all bass ackwards.  The Allegro doc shows some reverse bias 
tolerance, at -18 volts so hopefully I haven't blown all of them since I 
didn't go above 9 volts looking for some results. I do have 2 spares 
yet, up on the shelf with the Dell running the G0704.

So what do they use that molded cross in the other face for, some sort of 
a seating registration scheme when it in a vehicle part?

And I just found a callout pointed to the branded face, on page 13 of the 
docs. I have got to get a better magnifying glass, or get my cataracts 
removed.
