My new lathe will need a new toolpost (it doesn't have one).

I have used the "Dickson" style in the past, but I am wondering if a
Multifix clone might be worth the extra cost.

I don't really trust Dickson-type ones to index properly, as it seems
to be something of a lottery which of the 4 flats end up in contact.
(Probably less of a concern with genuine Dickson rather than
dickson-style.

I don't feel rich enough to buy a genuine Multifix, but there are some
clone sets on eBay at £200 or so.

Googling this question seems to only turn up discussion of the
relative merits of "piston" and "wedge" Aloris-style toolposts. I
would need some convincing to even consider those from someone who can
compare them to Dickson or Multifix.

If you can't fix it, you don't own it.
