It was possible to split the system at certain points, but there was no need to do so for general machine use. (There may have been something before the move to the PC platform, such as Sun workstations and Galil cards that worked that way, I don't have experience with that.)
The original UI was a text screen, then there came the TkEMC GUI using Tcl/Tk, that was still quite easy on CPU and memory resources (not even a 2D preview at first).
