Yes, in the early days on the fight against spam, the mail programs were changed so that the "from" and "reply-to" addresses were checked for validity. This meant that a spammer had to put (ANY) valid email address in there, and the mail would go through. If running windows, you could also have a computer virus; some of these appear to go through your emails and pick and choose valid email addresses. I'm out of the Arpanet/Internet/etc management for 10 or so years, so I'm not up on this aspect of spam.
