That is theory, which has been proved in practice. You have been
provided incorrect information.
EPP mode is required for dedicated I/O cards from Mesa or Pico
Systems, which provide much more I/O pins than there there are pins in
LPT port.
If You want to use LPT for direct I/O, forget about EPP mode! I have
tested that on machines I have built/retrofitted and this has
previously been confirmed here on list by Jon Elson (Pico Systems) and
Peter Wallace (Mesa).
