axis uses pretty standard opengl, nothing too esoteric. axis has always required opengl. I don't know why 2.3 would run and 2.4 would fail.
It's possible that you're hitting a genuine axis bug, albeit one that doesn't manifest any of the opengl implemenations I run axis on (from time to time I run on all of software glx, client-side software opengl, nvidia, intel, and ati fglrx). Unfortunately, as I don't use virtualbox I'm unlikely to be able to do anything more to diagnose or fix the problem. Also unfortunately, you don't have to go far to find reports of virtualbox's 3d acceleration causing problems with other apps http://forums.virtualbox.org/viewtopic.php?f=3&t=30964 http://forums.virtualbox.org/viewtopic.php?f=7&t=32119 I still think it's worth trying with client-side software opengl (ubuntu package libgl1-mesa-swx11) and/or in a guest where the virtualbox guest additions have never been installed.
