axis uses pretty standard opengl, nothing too esoteric.  axis has always
required opengl.  I don't know why 2.3 would run and 2.4 would fail.

It's possible that you're hitting a genuine axis bug, albeit one that
doesn't manifest any of the opengl implemenations I run axis on
(from time to time I run on all of software glx, client-side software
opengl, nvidia, intel, and ati fglrx).

Unfortunately, as I don't use virtualbox I'm unlikely to be able to do
anything more to diagnose or fix the problem.

Also unfortunately, you don't have to go far to find reports of
virtualbox's 3d acceleration causing problems with other apps

I still think it's worth trying with client-side software opengl (ubuntu
package libgl1-mesa-swx11) and/or in a guest where the virtualbox guest
additions have never been installed.
