Sorry for stating the obvious, but can't you revert back to 6.06? There are warnings sprinkled around the emc wiki warning not to perform upgrades of the system. You will end up with problems like you've had. As for the 8.04 problem, when I first started with EMC, the 8.04 live CD ran fine, but failed when I tried to install from it.
