Soft limits require EMC to know the position of the machine slides, not 
just the position relative
to the part.  Soft limits then allow the program to say "Hey, you will 
crash into the machine's
travel limit at line 22,543, do you really want me to start machining 
this part?"

Also, if you have mapped the errors in the leadscrews, it needs to know 
the absolute position
of the screws to apply the correction tables to the right spot.

If you have set up tool change positions, it needs to know the absolute 
position to get to those
positions.

If you have a 5-axis machine, it needs to align a bunch of axes 
correctly to accomodate the
offsets between the swivels and slides.

This is all less applicable to retrofitted manual machines, but will 
still save you from
annoying re-setups when you didn't position things right the first 
time.  Much better to discover
it before the first cut is taken.
