Ok.. this is VERY weird..  Now it's working.

I opened the config in the stepconfig utility, unassigned the pin that  
controls the spindle start relay, saved, Opened EMC, quit, went back  
and re-assigned the pin for spindle, opened EMC.. Homed.. and the  
spindle started up just like it was supposed to..

??? what the ????
