My Hardinge lathe has a spindle brake that fits this modus operandi.

It is like the magnetic clutch on the compressor of an automobile
air-conditioner, except it has a permanent magnet that activates the
brake when the power is off. An electromagnet is activated to counteract
the permanent magnet to release the brake. I think it is enormously
clever, but I am easy to please. Too bad they are expensive and can not
be rebuilt. I made drawings for a spring loaded/pneumatic release
version, but eBay came through on a new-old stock replacement.
