This was a HAL-only app, and I only ran graphical applications (such as halscope) over ssh. If you use "emc /path/to/ini", and that ini uses one of the text-mode user interfaces (keystick, maybe yemc or something), then you shouldn't need X to run EMC2. It may be time to make an updated text-mode UI, or even one based on svgalib (unless there's a tcl/tk for that already).
