One potential problem with this is that many stepper motors 
suffer from a lot of iron losses.  So much that they will 
overheat severely when run continuously at modest speed.  I 
think Mariss Freimanis of Gecko made some comment that some 
motor he was testing would overheat at something like 1300 RPM, 
with no motor current at all.  IE, he spun the motor with 
another motor, with nothing connected to the motor's wires, and 
it got quite hot after 20 minutes or so.

The OP might want to check this out, just chucking the motor 
shaft to a drill press or lathe to make sure this will not be a 
problem before he makes extensive effort putting the motor on 
the machine.
