In the helps, Bram notes that while you can put things in the /usr/share
locations you mentioned, they get overwritten on updates, and you also end
up with problems like e.g. that my /usr/share locations are owned by root,
so it's more a pain to work with them. It also means you don't get to bring
your personal files with you easily by simply backing up your local .vim
directory, meaning you have to remember when moving to a new machine, or
when wiping for a reinstall, or a new distro that you need to go get those
files in particular. I try to keep everything personal in ~, so I never lose
things to such events.
