Just checked more closely and looks like I might have just happened to see an exception to the general rule last time I looked. I can find a general-purpose “truly lead-free” Yageo 0402 10kΩ selling for $5.73/1000 on Digikey while the conventional series is $2.14/1000, e.g. In this instance, which series costs more/less is exactly as expected. The vast majority of thick-film resistors contain lead intentionally (particularly for reliability-intense applications), so if there’s scale anywhere it’d be in the product lines that have been on the market for a long time that have earned trust. I wonder how many people aren’t even aware of the exemptions and just think RoHS = lead-free (I was asked to purge the engineering lab stock of parts containing lead, and came across this issue, where part numbers that indicated lead-free and labels from Digikey would say lead-free when they actually weren’t). It’s in the ceramic, but not like, lead as a molecule but in a salt or other compound. I’m not even sure there’s any data about whether or not the existence of lead *atoms* in this context (and such a vanishingly small amount) is actually harmful, but given history re: Pb and that it’s still an unknown, the ultimate goal of finding something else makes sense presently. It’s not really explicitly advertised when the RoHS compliance is through exemption, but you find it in the compliance documents. Digikey seems to be very unpredictable in whether it acknowledges the exemption, while Mouser hides that detail behind a “details” hyperlink (otherwise just a green leaf icon for RoHS).
