AFAIU, beamer itself suggest using \alert to highlight text. You can
always supply \textbf{...} directly to get actual bold.

That said, I see no harm making command used for bold customizeable. But
remember that it may need to be compatible with action spec. Only a
handful of commands in beamer can use actions.
